Essaouira
It wasn’t until the eighteenth century that Essaouira – the city as we know it – was first constructed. With the intention of reorienting his kingdom in the direction of the Atlantic to take advantage of it's trading opportunities, Mohammed III established Essaouira as a significant port and exchange center. With the assistance of Théodore Cornut – a French Engineer hired by Mohammed III for that purpose – as well as other important technicians and architects, Mohammed III built a fortress along the rocky shore of the Essaouira bay.
This gave the location the name “Souira”, which mean “the small fortress”. Time altered this name to “Es-saouira”, more appropriately meaning “the beautifully designed”.
