What is a Riad ? Etymologically, riad means garden in Arabic. In Morocco, the riads (also transcribed riyads or ryads ) represent the traditional medina housing.
The term Medina -Madina in Arabic- means old city. It contrasts to the modern / new, European style city districts.
Essaouira's medina has many magnificent traditional riads hidden in it's street. Behind many doors one can often discover an elbow-shaped corridor designed to leave no chance to inquisitive eyes to steal a glimpse of the splendor of
the interior of the riad or the privacy of it's inhabitants.
Larger riads usually develops around a central patio generally planted with trees, often orange-trees and or a fountain that acts as a freshener. All the rooms open and face this very intimate garden. There are few openings to the
exterior. Smaller riads have a patio but no garden. They are then refered to
as "dar".
Recently rediscovered in the 90's the Medinas were more or less abandoned. They
inhabitants prefered modern and more practical new parts of town. Thus, sublime riads started to fall and decay.
Many riads have now found a new life. Some are converted into Palaces, Bed and Breakfasts, Guesthouses
or restaurants. Some riads also have been renovated and relive a second life has private residences. This revival bring Moroccans and foreigners alike to save this precious Moroccan patrimony.
